Oeiras is both a town and a municipality situated in the western segment of the Lisbon metropolitan area in continental Portugal. The entire municipality spans an area of 45.88 square kilometers. Within the municipality, the town of Oeiras specifically refers to the locality known as Oeiras e São Julião da Barra, Paço de Arcos e Caxias. This area itself covers 13.53 square kilometers and has a population of 58 000 residents, and is strategically located just 16 kilometers away, or approximately a 20-minute drive west of the Belém neighborhood in Lisbon. Due to its advantageous location near Lisbon and its role as a hub for numerous global companies, Oeiras is an attractive place for both living and conducting business.

The Oeiras municipality features a 10-kilometer river mouth front that extends from Forte de São Julião da Barra up to the Fundação Chapalimaud in Belém. The municipality is divided into several localities with varying population sizes: Oeiras e São Julião da Barra, Paço de Arcos e Caxias have 34 000 inhabitants; Porto Salvo has 16 000; Algés, Linda-a-Velha e Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo have 49 000; and Barcarena has 14 000.

Passeio Marítimo de Oeiras

The Passeio Marítimo de Oeiras is a waterfront promenade in the Oeiras municipality. It is 5,840 meters long and accommodates various activities such as running, walking, cycling, and skating. It also provides views of the sea. The walkway is part of an ongoing urban development project that aims to connect different areas of the Oeiras municipality along the coastline.

An extension has been added to the walkway, which connects Forte de São Bruno in Caxias to Cruz-Quebrada beach. This adds 1,990 meters to the walkway. The ultimate objective of the municipality is to extend this promenade to cover the entire coastal line of Oeiras, from Oeiras to Algés.

Subsequently, the Passeio Marítimo de Algés extends for an additional 2.2 kilometers, ending at Doca de Pedrouços in Algés, near Praia de Algés.

Taguspark in Oeiras

Taguspark in Oeiras is Portugal’s first science and technology park, founded in 1992. The park is home to prominent companies and institutions, such as Portugal Telecom and the Instituto Superior Técnico. In addition to office spaces, the park provides a range of amenities, including a conference center and a pharmacy. In 2013, the park expanded with the arrival of the pharmaceutical company Novartis and a student residence adjacent to the Instituto Superior Técnico. It is regarded as one of the leading technology parks in Europe.

Lagoas Park

Lagoas Park attracts significant foreign investment as it a prominent business center located in Porto Salvo, Oeiras, Portugal. The park houses around 100 companies, including major names like BMW, BP, Canon, Cisco, Dell, Google, Intel, and Samsung. Employing about 5,000 people, the park features office buildings, restaurants, a health club, and other amenities. It receives approximately 35,000 visitors each month.
